One could find 86 poultry and livestock slaughterhouses in Georgia in 2016, 65% out of which were in 4 regions (Kvemo Kartli, Kakheti, Imereti & Shida Kartli).

Number of slaughtered poultry and livestock
It was possible to slaughter maximum 34,457 livestock and poultry during the day in the slaughterhouses in 2016 (possible maximum daily capacity). 311,313 heads of livestock were slaughtered in slaughterhouses, including cattle – 59.7% and small livestock – 40.3% (sheep, goat, pig, etc.). Total number of poultry slaughtered in slaughterhouses is 9,620,566.

Number of produced meat
36,487.6 tons of meat were produced by the slaughterhouses during 2016 (i.e. slaughtered weight including poultry meat), 44.9% of which is beef, 37.1% – poultry meat, 16.9% – pork, 1.1% sheep and goat.

2,546,900 kg of meat from slaughtered livestock were purchased by slaughterhouses during 2016, from which 72.9% was beef and the rest pork, goat and sheep.
Slaughter costs
The average prices for slaughter of livestock and service were: slaughtering of cattle – 23.8 GEL, slaughter of sheep or goat – 10.6 GEL and pig slaughter – 22.5 GEL.
Technical equipment
Most of the slaughterhouses (58.1%) are partially equipped with modern technology, 34.9% of them are fully equipped and 7.0% of them are not equipped with advanced technology.
Loans
57.0% of the slaughterhouses do not use loans while 43.0% of them have taken loans for various purposes: 78.4% – for basic assets, 2.7% for working capital and 18.9% for both fixed and working capital.
Factors affecting competitiveness
17.4% of slaughterhouses believe that the volume of common costs has the most important influence on the competitiveness, 16.9% of the slaughterhouses state that the reason is the lack of relevant equipment / technology, 14.3% – employees’ qualification, 13.1% – low availability of financial resources, 12.8% – weak coordination with producers and state taxes while 12.5% of slaughterhouses state that falling demand for services has a significant impact on the competitiveness.
